What You Can Do to Help Minimize the Risk of AMD

Hello! In this month’s e-newsletter, we will be talking about part 2 of who’s at risk for AMD.

This month’s issue is especially important because we’re discussing things that you can control to help prevent AMD. If you have a high blood pressure, poor eating habits, are overweight or are outside a lot, you’ll want to read on to see how you can help prevent AMD.

One of the leading risk factors for Macular Degeneration is smoking. Smoking constricts retinal blood vessels and prevents photoreceptor cells from getting blood supply and oxygen.

People with high blood pressure can also be at increased risk for Macular Degeneration since high blood pressure can damage the delicate blood vessels of the retina and cause leakage.

A poor diet consisting of mainly processed food can produce free radicals and a lack of antioxidants that adversely affects the macula by damaging the photoreceptor cells. That’s why minerals such as Zinc and Antioxidants play a major role in preventing AMD.
