How Vitamin Supplements Can Help Cataracts and AMD

Hi everyone! In this month's e-newsletter, I'll be talking about how cataracts and AMD can damage your vision and how vitamins can play a role in preventing the effects of both.

Let's talk about cataracts. We were all born with a lens in our eyes that helps us to focus the light going through. As we age, that lens becomes cloudy and eventually blocks the light trying to enter our eyes.

Macular Degeneration is a largely age-related progressive disease of the macula which eventually distorts your central vision. If you have advanced AMD, you would have a central vision decrease but your peripheral vision would remain intact.

There are certain vitamins that are important in preventing cataracts and AMD and slow their growth over time.

Vitamin C and E have been found to decrease the number of cataracts over a person's lifetime. These vitamins are very common and are easily accessible to the average person.

Natural sources of vitamin C can be found in blueberries, oranges, cherries and strawberries to name a few.

For Vitamin E, they are commonly found in sunflower seeds, mangos, tomatoes, and peanuts.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are also good for delaying cataracts from becoming a problem. We talked about the benefits of both carotenoids in previous e-newsletters in helping with AMD. These two nutrients occur naturally in the eye and are found naturally in spinach, kale, lettuce and eggs as well as a wide variety of greens.
